Hottest Topics - New Sort by Rank Option
by Simon ini have just enabled a new sort feature which should appear as a new tab called "rank" on any of the topic listing pages (by forum or subject within it).. there's also a "hottest" link in the main nav.. what does it do?.
well, think of it like active topics ... the latest things go to the top.
except instead of anyone being able to make something go straight to the top simply by posting on it, now the ranking is based on a combination of things including how many likes and dislikes they have received combined with when the posts were made.. what should happen is that likes for new posts will give them a boost as will replies but over time their effect will diminish.

Greetings:
We've frequently discussed how forums are different from real life, yet many have developed close friendships through this and other boards. Some posters are super friendly and personable and others just state their business and do not interact. I understand human nature and cannot be friends with everyone. Even in the so-called real life I am not on intimate terms with everyone, even with acquaintances of many years.
Desirous of Change commented on the "signature" thread that signing one's real-life name, one's "signature," at the end of a post makes one seem more real in an otherwise anonymous setting. Whatever the signature, many here on the forum are very real people -- and friends -- to us. Of course, there are sound reasons why most posters don't want to reveal too much. After ten years on this great forum (thanks, Simon and Angharad), I am a lot more open than at the beginning.
Your thoughts are welcome.

Signatures on posts
by Simon incan i please ask people not to repeated signatures on their posts.. i have pm'd a few people directly with the request as i've noticed them but i guess the inevitable "explain why / show it's fair" means i need to make it publicly to all .... everyone's name and avatar is already displayed next to each post made so anything added at the bottom is really superfluous and just reduces readability on smaller devices where screen-real-estate is already at a premium.
if the layout is redesigned for mobile devices with the poster name at the bottom then it looks kind-of stupid (e.g.
"said simon - simon ...").

Hi Simon:
Whenever I see the word "signature," my immediate understanding is the cursive one I sign checks with or close a letter with. By "signature" do you mean the handle or its initials that we use on the forum?
CoCo - for ironic effect and to ask if my forum name is my "signature"?

The Man Who Hated Paradise
by compound complex inimpressions after lost horizon, by james hilton.
the valley of the blue moon, a verdant and slightly concave sprawling hollow at the foot of the largest snow-capped rock i ever laid eyes on, is not home to me, nor ever shall it be.
had i entered paradise under my own steam -- not kidnapped -- i daresay my impressions of utopia would be immeasurably more favorable.. for a certainty, i long for the hustle, the bustle, the din of my dirty and lusty city by the bay, whose roots sink deep into the ancient mire of human folly and wanton avarice.

. . . the only society that works is the one that allows us the pursuit of happiness not the finding of someones manufactured dream of a peaceful world. -- Nancy Drew
Thanks, Nancy! I just now saw this. I don't want a "manufactured dream" either.
See you in paradise!

Thanks, Terry, for sharing this recaptured memory. I always liked Astrud.
Similarly, on a subway train to or from a meeting in 1970 (Brooklyn), I caught the conclusion of a song, the incredible voice and lyrics accompanied by a symphonic surge of a never-before-heard tune. The following Saturday, after requisite time at the factory, 117 Adams Street, I turned on the radio and waited . . . and waited . . . and waited. . . .
At about 8:00 or so that night, I heard that glorious piece in its entirety:
The Bridge Over Troubled Water
You've given me hope for the eventual retrieval of the title that I cannot connect to this or that scene from a film or book.
THANKS.

Active JWs celebrating birthdays
by neat blue dog ini remember hearing parents say they're going out to eat for their child's birthday some years ago, and recently i see a lot of active jws wishing each other as well as worldly people on facebook a happy birthday, including emoticons related to partying.
is this a judicial offence, or have you seen anything similar?.

Thanks, DT:
I appreciate your thoughts. That poor man, who simply could not adjust to the wonders and beauties of the fabled paradise. He thought there was evil afoot . . .
Best.
